When we look at the officials numbers of cases reported during an epidemic, someone will invariably mutter `You'd better add a zero to that.' In the case of the 9,000 cases of COVID-19 reported by Iranian officials, in order to get closer to the true number of cases, you might need to add two zeros.
Two weeks ago, mathematical models suggested there were probably 18,000 cases based on just 3 exported cases. Since then - between scores more exported cases, and a doubling of cases every 4 days - Iran could easily be dealing with hundreds of thousands of cases or more.
The latest update, however, only includes 9,000 confirmed cases and 354 deaths. This suggests about a 4% CFR - high compared to everywhere other than Italy - but we've also seen unverified reports suggesting there may be hundreds more dead unaccounted for.
