Italy continues to report increasingly larger numbers of new COVID-19 cases and deaths, even though the government expanded their lockdown to cover the entire nation 10 days ago. Over the past 24 hours Italy has confirmed nearly 6,000 new cases (n=5986), and 627 additional deaths.
Both are 24-hour records. In hard hit lombardy, the preliminary CFR has risen to 11.4%, while in the rest of Italy the preliminary CFR is half that; 5.8%. While Italy may not be capturing a large number of mild and moderate cases - which would skew the CFR higher - they have now reported more deaths in less than a month than China has since December.
We continue to see harrowing reports of overcrowded ICUs, exhausted healthcare workers, and a hospital system on the verge of collapse, which is likely contributing to Italy's high death toll.
What we see happening in Italy, and in Iran, is the impetus to `flatten the curve' here in the United States (and elsewhere) in order to preserve our healthcare system.
