Italy: 6557 New COVID-19 Cases - 793 Deaths

#15,121

The epidemic numbers coming out of Italy continue to climb, despite the extraordinary measures ordered by the Italian government 11 days ago, steps which virtually shut down their country.  Hopefully we'll see a leveling off of numbers soon, but for now the numbers continue to rise.
Over the past 24 hours Italy has reported a record setting 6557 COVID-19 cases and an additional 794 deaths.   This brings the nation's total to 53,588 cases and 4825 deaths.
In hard hit lombardy, the preliminary CFR has risen again to 12.1%, while in the rest of Italy the preliminary CFR is half that; 6.1%.  Both numbers are considerably higher than anything we've seen reported anyplace else in the world.

While it is likely the CFR is skewed higher because a large number of mild and moderate cases are not being diagnosed and counted, the total number of deaths being reported by Italy has already exceeded far China's toll, and continues to climb.

Based on anecdotal reports, it appears that many of these deaths are probably due to the lack of ventilators, ICU beds, and the attrition of their hospital staff.  This collapse of the healthcare system is exactly what other countries are seeking to avoid by implementing social distancing measures.
