The record breaking ascent of COVID in the UK continues today with 106,122 new cases over the past 24 hours - an increase of13K cases over the previous high set 5 days ago - although all of these numbers are expected to under represent (probably by half) the true burden of the disease.
Hospitalizations have increased slightly (2.3%) over the past week, but not nearly as fast as infections have risen. Most patients don't become sick enough to be hospitalized for a week or longer after infection, so we'll need to wait a week or so before we see the impact of recent infections.
The latest Daily Omicron Overview adds more than 13.5K new confirmed cases, along with 22.5k additional suspected (SGFT) cases. Omicron-related deaths have increased to 18, while hospitalizations have risen to 195.
Again these number are preliminary, and should not be considered a full accounting.
Doubling times of SGTF cases continues to be 2.5 days or less in all regions.
