UKHSA: Omicron Daily Overview Report (Dec. 21th)

#16,436

With the dual caveats that weekends and holidays tend to skew or delay the reporting of COVID cases, hospitalizations, and deaths, we have today's Omicron Overview report from the UK. Additionally, the percentage of cases `captured' by surveillance is a subset of the real number of cases, which may be 2 or 3 times higher.

The big unknown remains the severity of Omicron vs. the Delta variant, and while there is some optimism that it is somewhat less pathogenic, it will take several weeks before that can be quantified.

Today's report finds another 15,000+ confirmed Omicron cases added over the past 24 hours, along with 4 more hospitalized cases.  Deaths remain unchanged, at 14, since yesterday.

Officially the UK reports confirmed cases, but preliminary cases - identified by the S Gene Target Failure on some types of PCR tests - are another way to track the trend.  And cases identified by SGTF continue to double at a phenomenal rate; roughly every 2 days.
