CDC Nowcast: Omicron Now > 98% Of All U.S. Cases

CDC Nowcast - Omicron > 98% of All U.S.  Cases 01/08/22

#16,502

The CDC has published their latest Nowcast projections of the Omicron variant, and in just 6 weeks it has gone from obscurity to completely dominating the COVID scene in the United States, and in much of the world.

This variant - which was first announced over the Thanksgiving Holidays -  spread so rapidly that surveillance and reporting systems had difficulties tracking its growth in December.

But as the map below indicates - in most of the United States- it you become infected with COVID you almost certainly have the Omicron variant.

While considered `milder' than the Delta variant, the New York Times is reporting a record number (1.4 million) new COVID cases over the past 24 hours, and a pandemic-high number of COVID hospitalizations (140K) across the nation.

While cases should peak sometime in the next couple of weeks, the impact of this wave on the U.S. workforce, and economy, is likely to be significant.  We've already seen many hospitals forced to invoke Crisis Standards of Care, and that trend is only likely to increase in the weeks ahead.
