CDC Telebriefing Today On Acute Hepatitis Of Unknown Cause

#16,733

Later today (1:30pm EST) the CDC will hold a telebriefing on what is currently known about global reports of acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in (mostly) young children.  This is a topic we've been following for nearly a month:

UKHSA Hepatitis Update: UK Reports 34 More Cases (n=145)

ECDC: Rapid Risk Assessment On Increase in Severe Acute Hepatitis Cases of Unknown Aetiology in Children

ECDC: Rapid Risk Assessment On Increase in Severe Acute Hepatitis Cases of Unknown Aetiology in Children

WHO Update On Acute Hepatitis of Unknown Etiology: At Least 169 Cases From 11 Countries

CDC HAN Advisory On Adenovirus Testing and Reporting Of Children With Acute Hepatitis

Alabama DOH: Investigation Into 9 Young Children with Hepatitis/Adenovirus

Eurosurveillance: Investigation into Cases of Hepatitis of Unknown Aetiology Among Young Children, Scotland

Although a possible adenovirus correlation has been suggested, the CDC has emphasized (see Proactive Statement: MMWR on children with acute hepatitis and adenovirus infection in Alabama) that it isn't the only possible explanation.

At this time, we believe adenovirus may be the cause for these reported cases, but other potential environmental and situational factors are still being investigated. Adenovirus type 41 is not usually known as a cause of hepatitis in otherwise healthy children, and no known epidemiological link or common exposures among these children has been found. Some causes have already been ruled out, including:
  • hepatitis viruses A, B, and C
  • SARS-CoV-2 infection
  • autoimmune hepatitis
  • Wilson disease
