China Reports 8th H7N9 Fatality

An 83 year-old patient that was described as being in critical condition with the H7N9 virus on April 2nd (see Statement From Jiangsu Province Health Department On H7N9) has died, according to an announcement this morning from the Jiangsu Health Department.


This makes the 8th known fatality (out of 24 cases identified to date) from this emerging virus. Many of the other surviving patients are describes as being in serious or critical condition.

Jiangsu Provincial Health Department Bulletin, April 9, Jiangsu Province, one cases of human infection with the H7N9 avian influenza confirmed cases died after death.

 

Patients Shen, male, 83 years old, Suzhou Wujiang District. Disease, on March 20 for medical treatment at a hospital in Suzhou. April 2 confirmed human infection of H7N9 avian influenza. Provincial expert group has organized a consultation, guiding clinical treatment. On the afternoon of April 9, died after rescue invalid.

 

 

The question of whether there are mild, and as yet undetected cases, from this virus remains unanswered.

 

Until we get a better idea of the total number of infections, it is impossible to accurately gauge the mortality rate from this virus.
