This morning we learn of yet another HPAI H5N5 detection - this time in Northeastern Greece - very near the Turkish border. This makes the 3rd European country in a week (Germany, Slovenia, & Greece) to report this emerging subtype.
As discussed in some depth earlier today in Germany: HPAI H5N2 Detected In WIld Birds In Baden-Württemberg, Clade 2.3.4.4. H5 viruses have a proclivity for spinning off viable reassortant viruses.
While we've only seen 3 H5N5 poultry outbreaks thus far - all in Germany - in the past few weeks it has been reported in wild birds in a half dozen European countries, increasing the risk of seeing more farms affected.
My thanks to Lisa Schnirring for the heads's up on this OIE release.
