The graph above - published yesterday on the CDC site - compares the cumulative number of hospitalizations for this and the last 5 previous flu seasons (including the high severe 2014-15 season), which saw roughly 700,000 people hospitalized.
What is quite remarkable is that in just Epi week 5, we find ourselves already exceeding the end-of-season totals for 3 of those seasons, and are approaching the season totals reported in the both 2014-15 and 2015-17.
