Report: Virus in chicken deaths at Japan farm identified as virulent H5 bird flu

TOKYO (AP) - Japanese authorities identified the virus found in the latest chicken deaths in western Japan as the H5 family of virulent bird flu virus, Kyodo News agency reported.

Preliminary rests indicated a bird flu outbreak in the deaths of at least 30 chickens at a farm in Okayama prefecture (state) last week, and officials have sent the virus taken from the birds to a state laboratory for further tests.

Earlier this month, thousands of chickens died in two outbreaks caused by the H5N1 bird flu virus in the southern Japanese prefecture of Miyazaki. - AP
