Vietnam: Bird Flu In Hanoi

# 548

Last month, Vietnam reported they were `bird flu free', a status that lasted less than two weeks.  Since then, new outbreaks in poultry have occurred in the north and in the south.    Now, bird in the capital city have been afflicted.

HANOI (XFN-ASIA) - The H5N1 strain of bird flu was reported in Hanoi today after more than 1,000 young chickens died of the virus, the ministry of agriculture said.

About 1,150 chickens died of avian influenza on two farms in a village in Hanoi's suburban Dong Anh district, said an official online report from the ministry's animal health department.

The remainder of the 1,300 birds from the two farms had been culled, it said.

Hanoi's neighbouring Ha Tay province, the major supplier of poultry products to the city, reported a bird flu outbreak yesterday.

The News daily today quoted Agriculture Minister Cao Duc Phat as saying he was worried about the spread of bird flu although all recent outbreaks had been contained.

As we've seen, time and again, despite aggressive eradication programs, the H5N1 virus always seems to return.
