Report: Bird flu found near Kuala Lumpur, slaughter of chickens under way

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) -- The virulent H5N1 strain of bird flu has been detected outside Kuala Lumpur, one year after the country was declared free of the disease, a local newspaper reported Wednesday.

The Star newspaper's message alerts service for mobile phones said bird flu was detected in Kampung Paya Jaras Hillir village in Selangor state, which surrounds Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's main city.

Veterinary or health ministry officials could not be immediately reached to confirm the report.
