WHO: Will Host H5N1 Talks In Geneva

On Friday a coalition of H5N1 researchers offered a 60 day moratorium on controversial bird flu research in order to `allow time for international discussion’ (see Scientists Announce 60 Day Moratorium On Some H5N1 Research).

 

Late yesterday the World Health Organization  announced that they will host talks in Geneva among a small group of scientists next month.  As you might expect, @HelenBranswell of the Canadian Press  is all over this story.

A small -- in relative terms -- group of technical experts will be invited to Geneva in mid-February to begin the difficult task of trying to break an impasse arising from the proposed publication of controversial bird flu research, the World Health Organization revealed Saturday.

With both sides seemingly solidly entrenched,we’ll have to wait to see whether any substantial compromises can be forged during this relatively short 60 day time-out.
