H7N9: 2 In Zhejiang, Death In Shanghai, 1 Suspect Case Shandong Province

The end-of-day case counts are coming out of China, and so far Zhejiang Province reports two new cases, Shanghai reports the death of one already known case, and for the first time, Shandong Province is reporting a `suspect’ case.

 

Although H7N9 was first detected in the city of Shanghai, Zhejiang province leads the way with the most cases (n=40), which represents more than 35% of all known cases.

Xinhua Jinan, April 22 (Reporter Wang Haiying) reporter learned from the Shandong Provincial Health Department, Shandong Province CDC laboratory confirmed case of human infection of H7N9 avian influenza suspected cases. Cases from Zaozhuang, a 36-year-old male patient. Shandong Province found the first case of human infection with the H7N9 avian influenza suspected cases.

 

It is understood that this patient is treated by Zaozhuang Municipal Hospital, the hospital is taking active measures to treat the patients. Shandong Provincial Health Department has also sent the provincial expert team to a local guide clinical treatment, epidemiological investigation, prevention and control work. Zaozhuang City CDC has implemented nine close contacts under medical observation and found no flu-like symptoms.

 

In accordance with the provisions of the National Health and Family Planning Commission, Shandong Province Center for Disease Control has specimens sent to CDC for review, so that the final diagnosis.

 

While apparently PCR-positive in the local lab, this case must be confirmed by China’s CDC.

 

Another 2 H7N9 cases reported in Zhejiang

HANGZHOU, April 22 (Xinhua) -- Another two cases of H7N9 bird flu were confirmed on Monday in east China's Zhejiang Province, bringing the province's total number of infections to 40, said local authorities.

 

The patients, a 54-year-old female office clerk surnamed Ye from the provincial capital of Hangzhou and a 32-year-old farmer from the neighboring Jiangxi Province, are receiving treatment in two local hospitals, according to the provincial health department.

 

A 41-year-old patient surnamed Zhang, who was tested positive for H7N9 on April 17, recovered and left hospital on Monday morning, according to the department.

 

So far, five people have died of H7N9 bird flu and two have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery in the province.

 

Meanwhile, a 36-year-old man suspected of being infected with H7N9 was found in Zaozhuang City of east China's Shandong Province on Monday, the first case discovered in the province, according to the provincial health department.

 

The man's sample has been sent to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention for reaffirmation.

By the provincial CDC testing, specimens of 2 patients are infected with the H7N9 avian influenza virus nucleic acid positive. My Office experts on the patient's clinical manifestations, epidemiological data and laboratory test results are discussed, and diagnosis of human infection of H7N9 avian influenza confirmed cases. Currently, two patients are mild, the hospital is under active treatment.

 

The morning of April 22, the province April 17 patients diagnosed Zhang (male, 41 years old, cadres, Huzhou) discharged by the treatment and rehabilitation.

 

Assuming the Shandong case is confirmed (which seems likely),  the current tally for this outbreak should now rise to 105 cases and 21 fatalities.
