My thanks to Dr. Ian M. Mackay from the University of Queensland in Australia for the link to his blog – Virology Down Under - where he has put together a very helpful timeline, and commentary, on the H7N9 cases reported out of China (link).
In addition to providing extensive background information on human viruses, his blog also covers breaking news.
Some recent posts include:
Break news of interest to virology
- Added 03.04.13. Four new influenza A virus H7N9 bird flu cases, no new deaths, from the Jiangsu province (N of Shanghai, NE of Anhui province). See more on influenzavirus here
- Added 02.04.13. How does the death of thousands of pigs found in the Huangpu river, relate to the H7N9 cases? Does it relate at all (or was it due to porcine circovirus? PCV is not commonly a symptomatic infection in pigs)? Could there be another, as yet undiscovered agent involved that is common to both outbreaks? Good job for NGS!
- Added 31.03.13. Two Influenza A virus H7N9 ("bird flu")-related deaths (Feb/March) and one patient in critical condition (current) in Shanghai and Anhui province respectively. See more on influenzaviruses here
- Added 28.03.13. Influenza outbreak and deaths at a Queensland nursing home highlight the importance of people aged over 65 getting a flu vaccine...once available.
I’ll definitely be adding Ian’s blog to the list of resources in my side panel.
