While the style of the Saudi daily MERS announcements has certainly improved under the guidance of their new Minister of Health (after a good start) the substance of these reports remains erratic and frustrating.

As an example, yesterday the report indicated `1 case that has not displayed any symptoms’ that was not included in the case tally – a deviation from earlier counting protocols - that if maintained, quickly could skew future case counts.

And for at least a week, the relationship of infected `contacts of existing cases’ has not been disclosed, effectively preventing us from tracking HCW or nosocomial infection.  On the plus side, we do seem to be getting more timely reporting of cases.

Making sense of all of this isn’t easy, but Dr. Ian Mackay remains undaunted, and continues producing terrific charts and excellent observations.  Today he looks at recent case counts trends and an apparent rise in the proportion of fatal cases (PFC) from Saudi Arabia.
