Saudi Arabia’s recent uptick in MERS cases continues today with three more cases reported, bringing to 12 the number of cases reported over the past 8 days.
Of those, half have come from the Saudi Capital Riyadh, where yesterday there were unconfirmed (and quickly denied) media reports that King Fahd Hospital’s ER had been closed due to MERS cases.
Today we learn of two more cases from Riyadh, and one from Dammam. Of these, only one is listed to have had a known risk exposure (to animals).
Additionally the death of a previously announced case was reported.
A little over a week ago, in anticipation of seeing more cases later in the spring, the CDC’s MMWR posted a MERS Epidemiological Update & Guidance document for clinicians, public health, and the public. And earlier this week, in WHO MERS Update & The Community Transmission Mystery, we looked at some of the – as yet, unanswered questions surrounding the community transmission of the virus.
