The multi-focal MERS outbreak in Wadi Aldwasir has now increased to 10 cases, with two more secondary infections (1 household, 1 healthcare) reported today, and a change in the hospitalization status of one of yesterday's cases.

First the two new cases reported today, bringing Saudi Arabia's total to 24 since the 1st of January, 14 of which have been reported over the past 8 days.

In addition to two other patients described as having recent camel contact - the MOH has reported 3 different clusters of cases in Wadi Aldwasir.
  • 3 cases have been listed as secondary, household contacts
  • 2 cases have been listed as secondary, community-acquired
  • 3 cases have been listed as secondary, healthcare-acquired.
Details on these cases, and specifics on epidemiological links between them, remain scarce.

Of note, one of yesterday's cases involved a 39 y.o. male who was categorized as a secondary, healthcare-acquired and was reportedly in home isolation. Home isolation is often used by the Saudis for asymptomatic cases - usually detected via contact tracing - who test positive for the MERS virus.
Today that patient's status has been changed to hospitalized.  Whether this was due to a change in his condition, or done simply as a precaution, isn't known.
As for the 5 MERS cases (including 2 deaths) reported over the past week in Oman, so far today I've seen no new updates.
