For the second day in a row Japan's MAFF is reporting a new outbreak of Classical Swine Fever, this time in Aichi Prefecture. This is the 8th farm outbreak reported from Japan in the last 20 days.
CSF, while similar in appearance and impact to African Swine Fever (ASF), is caused by a different virus. Both diseases are highly contagious among pigs, and can be economically devastating for pork producers, but neither disease poses a direct human health threat.Classical Swine Fever re-emerged in Japan last September after an absence of 26 years, and has since sparked 19 farm outbreaks - and been detected in more than 260 wild boar - across Gifu and Aichi Prefectures.
Although Japan has been battling this disease for over 6 months, the pace of reported outbreaks has increased markedly over the few weeks, with 9 of 19 farm outbreaks (47%) reported in the past 32 days.
This translated report from Japan's MAFF.
