Japan MAFF: 30th Farm Outbreak Of Classical Swine Fever

#14,171

The recent heightened pace of outbreaks of Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in Japan continues with their Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF) reporting the 6th farm detection in the past 35 days. While it took 164 days for Japan to report their first 10 farm outbreaks, we've seen that number more than triple since early March, with 20 new outbreaks in the past 125 days.
The OIE has similarly reported more than a tripling in the number of infected wild boar (rising from 218 in March to 722 (Update #31) detected in Gifu and Aichi Prefectures.
CSF, which reappeared in Japan last September after an absence of 26 years, is similar in appearance and impact to African Swine Fever (ASF), but is caused by a different virus.
Both are highly contagious among pigs, and can be devastating to the pork industry, but neither disease poses a direct human health threat.
This (translated) report from Japan's MAFF.
