Japan Maff: 33rd Farm Outbreak of Classical Swine Fever

#14,215

While China, Vietnam, and a host of other Asian nations are combating African Swine Fever (ASF), Japan continues to wage war against Classical Swine Fever (CSF), which re-appeared last September after an absence of 26 years.
For the 6th time in the past 30 days Japan's Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF) is reporting a farm outbreak of CSF, once again in hard hit Gifu Prefecture.
While it took 164 days for Japan to report their first 10 farm outbreaks, we've seen that number more than triple since early March, with 23 new outbreaks in the past 144 days.
CSF, while similar in appearance and impact to African Swine Fever (ASF), is caused by a different virus. Both, however, are highly contagious among pigs, and can be economically devastating for pork producers, but neither disease poses a direct human health threat.
Today's (translated) announcement from Japan's MAFF, and then a closer look at a revised OIE report:

Three weeks ago, in Japan MAFF: 30th Farm Outbreak Of Classical Swine Fever, we looked at the latest OIE follow up report (Update #31) which stated 722 infected wild boar had been detected in Gifu and Aichi Prefectures since last September.
For reasons that are not exactly clear, that 31st update was removed from the OIE's list some time later, and a new 31st update was posted only a few days ago (dated July 23rd).
This new 31st update contains the first mention of CSF detected in wild boar outside of Gifu and Aichi Prefectures; specifically in Mie Prefecture, which recorded their first farm outbreak earlier this week.
The cutoff date (June 4th) in the new report (see below) appears to be in error, as Update #30 - released more than a month ago - had a June 19th cutoff date, and all 81 outbreaks listed fell between June 12th and July 2nd.
In any event, the new number of wild boar detected with the CSF virus in Japan has jumped - as of nearly 4 weeks ago - to 732.

Summary of the wild boar surveillance

As of 4th June, 1,548 wild boars (307 dead and 1,241 captured) in Gifu prefecture have been tested and 693 (230 dead and 463 captured) were found to be positive for CSF virus (CSFV) by RT-PCR since 13th of September 2018.

561 wild boars (28 dead and 533 captured) in Aichi prefecture have been tested and 35 were found to be positive (12 dead and 23 captured) for CSFV by RT-PCR since 14th of September 2018.

29 wild boars (6 dead and 23 captured) in Mie prefecture have been tested and 4 were found to be positive (0 dead and 4 captured) for CSFV by RT-PCR since 14th September 2018.

Among the other prefectures, 343 wild boars (296 dead and 47 captured) in 40 prefectures were tested and all were found to be negative for CSFV by RT-PCR since the 14th of September 2018.
