ASF was first reported in North Korea last May, but since then the DPRK has been absolutely silent about its spread, or impact. While there is speculation that South Korea's ASF crisis came by way of North Korea, it isn't readily apparent how the virus crossed the heavily fortified border.
The detection of the ASF virus in wild boar, however, is an ominous sign as farm outbreaks can be more easily contained, and infected pigs culled.
The success rate of containing and eradicating African Swine Fever in other countries has been a dismal one, and so as more farms are reported infected,  hopes are waning that South Korea's rapid response to their current crisis will fully contain the virus.
