Italy MOH: 3,497 New COVID-19 Cases, 175 Additional Deaths

#15,096

Italy continues to be the hardest hit nation outside of Mainland China with the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than 21,000 confirmed cases to date. Over the past 24 hours the MOH has confirmed their largest one-day jump in cases (n=3497), along with 175 new deaths.
Just over three weeks ago, Italy had only 3 known cases. They now have over 21,000 confirmed cases - and thousands more are likely infected but not counted.
The entire country has been in lockdown for nearly a week (see Italy MOH: Statement On Extension of `Exceptional Measures' To All Of Italy), which should slow transmission. But with an extended (2-14 day) incubation period, it may take another week before we see appreciable progress.

Meanwhile the elevated apparent CFR remains very high (6.8%) - at least compared to other nations - which range from 1% to 3%.  Hospitals ICUs are reportedly over capacity with severe cases and hampered by staff shortages. As we discussed earlier today in Ventilator Shortages And Pandemic Triage, that may be contributing to their high number of deaths.
