South Korea: COVID-19 Cases Exceed 5,300 - 32 Deaths

#15,021

While it may be hard to believe, just 14 days ago South Korea's COVID-19 case count - which began nearly a month earlier - stood at just 31 cases.  Since then we've seen a 170-fold increase in just two weeks, illustrating how easily the virus can spread undetected in a community.
While 80% of South Korea's cases are located in Daegu, and linked to the Shincheon Daegu Church, the virus is gaining traction across much of the nation.
Their experience reminds us how quickly a relatively small number of hospitalized or community acquired cases - such as we are currently seeing in the United States, the UK, and many other countries - can morph into a national health crisis.

With an extended incubation period, and the ability for infected individuals to shed the virus before showing overt symptoms, whatever we see in the way of community spread today is always a week or two behind reality.
South Korea's growing epidemic is also of great concern because of more than 30,000 military personnel - and their dependents - stationed on the peninsula, along with tens of thousands of American citizens living and working there.
Some excerpts from the latest South Korean CDC update follow:
