Japan: 5th Prefecture (Nara) Reports HPAI Farm Outbreak - South Korea Reports 3rd Outbreak

#15,603

Japan's worst avian flu outbreak in at least 6 years continues with a 5th Prefecture (Nara) reporting the nation's 16th farm outbreak of HPAI H5 (likely H5N8) since the start of March. Additionally, South Korea reports their 3rd farm outbreak amid almost continuous reports of environmental detection of the virus in the wild.

Meanwhile, in Europe, the avian flu situation continues to worsen, with recent farm outbreaks reported in the UK, at a large poultry farm in Poland, and The Netherlands

While the particular clade/subtype of avian flu currently being reported (HPAI H5N8 clade 2.3.4.4 B) has not been linked to human infection, it is nonetheless a serious concern for the poultry industry.

First stop is this announcement from Nara Prefecture of Japan's 16th farm outbreak of HPAI this fall, reportedly in a chicken farm in Gojo City raising roughly 80,000 birds.

Japan's Ministry of Environment has yet to post this outbreak, but it is being well covered by the local media. While hard numbers are hard to come by, reports suggest that Japan has culled well over 2 million birds in the past 30 days due HPAI.

South Korea, which reported its first avian flu detection in environmental samples in mid-August, has been dealing with almost non-stop findings of both LPAI and HPAI H5 and H7 viruses in wild birds since October, but has managed to keep farm outbreaks down to just three.

While still reporting individual findings, on Friday MAFRA published:

Continuous detection of H5·H7 avian influenza (AI) antigens in wild birds all over the country

□The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock (Minister Kim Hyeon-su) conducted an interim test on wild bird samples collected from migratory bird habitats in Gyeonggi-do, Chungcheongnam-do, Jeollanam-do, Jeollabuk-do, and Gyeongsangnam-do from November 30 to December 2, as a result of H5·H7 type avian influenza ( AI) said that 10 antigens were detected.

○ Avian influenza antigens were detected in Osan, Gyeonggi-do (Hwanggujicheon), Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do (Nonsancheon, Noseongcheon), Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do (Jeongeupcheon), Gochang (Jujincheon), Gimje (Dongjingang), and Suncheon, Jeollanam-do (2 cases ))·Hampyeong (Tympanic Source), Changnyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do (Upo Wetland),
○ H5 or H7 avian influenza antigens were detected in wild bird feces or captured* samples, and a detailed examination is currently underway. It is expected to take ~5 days.
* (Capture sample) Nonsan, Chungnam, Jeonnam Hampyeong Komakwoncheon, Osan Hwanggujicheon, except for feces

□ The Ministry of Agriculture and Food implemented reinforced quarantine measures in accordance with the Avian Influenza Emergency Action Guidelines (AI SOP) immediately upon detection of this wild bird AI antigen. have.
① Access control at the relevant wild bird fecal collection point (initiated by the initial response team at the Defense Prevention Headquarters)
② Set a 10km radius as a “ wild bird bird watchdog area”, restrict movement and strengthen surveillance and inspection for poultry farms within the area
③ Migratory bird sites and nearby Reinforcing prevention and prevention of poultry farms

□ In addition, avian influenza gene was detected in samples of wild birds in Nonsan Stream in Nonsan, Chungcheongnam-do (Samples collected on November 24 and 11.25), Haebancheon Stream in Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do (11.26), and Damyang Wetland in Damyang, Jeonnam (11.26). Revealed.

Details on the third infected farm were published yesterday by MAFRA.

ㅇ When highly pathogenic avian influenza is confirmed , it is planned to implement enhanced quarantine measures such as preventive killing within 3km of the outbreak farm .

After three years of relative quiescence, HPAI H5 is spreading around the globe again via migratory birds, which follow a variety of flyways as they move north and south with the changing seasons.

All of which means that what is occurring in Northern Europe or East Asia today may spread to other regions and nations further on down the line in the months ahead.
