Unconfirmed Media Reports Of an Avian Influenza (H5N1?) Death In India

#16,074

Although I've been trying for the better part of an hour, I haven't been able to find any official confirmation yet on the story which hit the news wires a couple of hours ago regarding what would be (if confirmed) India's first human infection with H5N1 (note: some reports simply say `Avian Influenza').

Tetano, on FluTrackers, posted one of the earliest reports just before 1pm EDT today (LINK), but over the past hour it has been echoed by numerous other media outlets.

The story is summed up by the headline and story below.

India reports this year's first bird flu death; AIIMS-Delhi staff placed under isolation

The staff at AIIMS-Delhi has been placed under isolation after an 11-year-old boy succumbed to bird flu (Avian Influenza) at the facility on Tuesday.

Despite the headline, officially India has never reported an H5N1 infection before, although we saw numerous `suspected' cases during their H5N1 epizootic 12 years ago, and neighboring countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal have all reported cases (see WHO list below).

Hopefully we'll get confirmation, and additional details, in the hours and days ahead.
