Since COVID booster shots were first announced last August, the standard advice in most countries (including the UK and the United States) has been to get it no sooner than six months after the 2nd dose of an mRNA vaccine.

Two weeks ago, on the advice of their JCVI, the UK halved that time to 3 months.

The booster will be offered in order of descending age groups, with priority given to the vaccination of older adults and those in a COVID-19 at-risk group. In response to the changing risk posed by the Omicron variant, the booster will now be given no sooner than 3 months after the primary course.

Today, worried about waning immunity and the spread of Omicron,  Denmark has reduced their waiting time to 4.5 months.  This from the Danish Health and Medicines Authority.

Revaccination is advanced for anyone aged 40 and over
Due to the new and more contagious Omikron variant, the Danish Health and Medicines Authority has decided to advance the 3rd injection for everyone aged 40 and over, so that they receive the vaccine 4.5 months after the 2nd injection.

Right now, there is a flare-up in Denmark in the covid-19 epidemic, and at the same time it is expected that the rapidly emerging Omikron variant will give rise to a large number of infected people. The immunity obtained by vaccination may be somewhat weaker against the new variant, but preliminary data suggest that a 3 plug. provides increased immunity, which can prevent severe courses of covid-19.

"We are in a serious situation due to the new and more contagious variant. Fortunately, we have already revaccinated the oldest part of the population, and now we are all advancing over 40 years, so they get the 3rd plug after 4.5 months. In this way, we can enter the winter with better protection of those who are at increased risk of serious progress, and increased immunity in the population, ”says Søren Brostrøm, director of the National Board of Health.

The advance applies to everyone born in 1981 or earlier, and they can get 3rd stitch from day 140 after 2nd stitch. Already now you can go to vacciner.dk and book an appointment, and you do not have to wait to get your invitation in the e-box. You can also contact the vaccine sites that offer drop-in vaccination from Monday. The National Board of Health recommends that everyone get a 3rd plug as soon as possible.

"We invite a lot of people at once, and therefore it is important that you arm yourself with a little patience in the next few days. We do everything we can to make it flexible, but you can experience waiting time on vacciner.dk and queues at the vaccine sites. If you can not find a time in the near future on vacciner.dk, then we recommend everyone to try again later, as more vaccine times are posted on an ongoing basis, ”says Søren Brostrøm.

More than 700,000 people will receive their invitation this week. This will put tremendous pressure on the booking system. The regions have in recent weeks carried out a massive upscaling of capacity, and they continue to expand and to increase the number of times. All regions are increasingly involving general practitioners, private vaccination companies and pharmacies in the vaccination effort.
