NHC 5 am: Subtropical Storm Nicole Forms - Threatens Florida

#17,109

As mentioned yesterday, the Atlantic Hurricane season runs through the end of November, and once again Florida finds itself in the path a named storm.  This time, it is (currently) sub-tropical in nature, but that could change.

Subtropical storms have the characteristics of both tropical and extra-tropical cyclones. They generally have a less well defined center - but often sport a larger wind field - and like their tropical cousins, can produce hurricane-like conditions.

The current forecast calls for Nicole to be at or near hurricane strength when it reaches the Bahamas and Florida's east coast later this week. Its impacts are likely to be felt across all of Florida in what could be prolonged event.  Warnings and watches will likely be issued later today.

Key messages this morning from the NHC include:

While the exact path and intensity of Nicole remain uncertain, the models are in pretty good agreement that it will visit Florida first, and then probably slide up the Eastern seaboard over the weekend.

Power outages, coastal and inland flooding, and beach erosion are all possible impacts.
