Given the detection of H5N8 on the Austrian side of Lake Constance earlier this week, it isn't terribly surprising that the Swiss are also reporting the discovery of 3 dead ducks that have tested positive on their end of the lake as well.
Today's notification from the OIE brings to 6 (Hungary, Poland, Germany, Croatia, Austria and Switzerland) the number of European countries reporting HPAI H5N8 since the first of the month. Additionally, we are awaiting test results from two other countries (Denmark & The Netherlands).All of this seems to be following the pattern the FAO has been warning about since early September (see FAO On HPAI H5's 4th Intercontinental Wave). With the fall/winter avian flu season only just barely underway, this could be a very long winter for poultry interests across much of Europe.
