Geneva: No Deal On Virus Sharing

# 3207

This weekend’s meeting in Geneva on the sharing of virus samples for the production of vaccines has ended, again, without an agreement.

The statement issued by the WHO is that:

The intergovernmental meeting concluded its deliberation and reached an agreement on most elements of the pandemic influenza preparedness framework for the sharing of influenza viruses and access to vaccines and other benefits. However, further work needs to be undertaken on key remaining elements.

Which sounds suspiciously like the announcements (see Despite Progress Indonesia Still Unwilling to Share Virus Samples) made at the end of the last couple of meetings

Progress . . . but no agreement.

World governments failed to reach a final deal on the sharing of virus research material and vaccines in case of a global flu pandemic at a weekend meeting of the World Health Organisation.

"The intergovernmental meeting concluded its deliberation and reached an agreement on most elements of the pandemic influenza preparedness framework for the sharing of influenza viruses and access to vaccines and other benefits," a statement said."However, further work needs to be undertaken on key remaining elements," it added.

Among the issues which remain unresolved following the two-day meeting that ended yesterday are the sharing of data between laboratories and intellectual property rights on viruses.
