Vietnam Reports New H5N1 Case

Although billed as the first case in Hanoi of the year, this is the 4th confirmed case of the year out of Vietnam.  

 

In 2009, Vietnam reported only 5 H5N1 cases (all fatal).

First A/H5N1 patient in Hanoi in 2010

The Department for Preventive health and the Environment on March 12 confirmed the first A/H5N1 patient in Hanoi in 2010.

 

The 25-year-old woman, who lives in Phu Ninh commune, Soc Son district, was admitted to Bac Thang Long hospital on March 7 with pneumonia symptoms such as high temperatures, headache and breathing difficulties.

 

The woman was treated with anti-virus drugs and antibiotics, but was taken to Bach Mai hospital on March 10 due to her declining health.

 

One day later, the National Institute for Hygiene and Epidemiology confirmed that the patient tested positive for the lethal strain of the A/H5N1 virus.

 

She is currently using respirator at Bach Mai hospital’s intensive care unit.
