Bird Flu Reports From Vietnam & Indonesia

Overnight a number of bird flu reports have been posted by newshounds on the major flu forums, and by bloggers in Flublogia.  Once again it is Indonesia which is seeing the most activity, but we’ve fresh reports coming out of Vietnam as well.

 

Since Indonesia has been getting most of the attention these past few weeks, we’ll start with reports from Vietnam posted by Managing Editor of FluTrackers, Sally Furniss.

 

First from the Voice of Vietnam, this translated article on outbreaks in Ha Tinh province.

Appearance of avian influenza H5N1 in Ha Tinh GUIs

Kaur, Bengkulu ::: Bird flu spreads in four sub-districts

Bengkulu – Livestock Service of Bengkulu stated emergency to four sub-districts (kecamatan) in Kabupaten Kaur, Bengkulu. They are Kecamatan Luas, Kelam Tengah Kaur Selatan, Padang Guci Hulu and Tetap.

 

This is reported by Participatory Disease Surveillance and Response (PDSR).

 

Even though, until now Disease Control Center (LDCC) has not issued extraordinary-event (Kejadian Luar Biasa/KLB) status to Kabupaten Kaur.

 

So far, the disease has not spread to human.

Dutchy also has a report on a small outbreak near Bandung, the capital of West Java Province, and a follow up to yesterday’s report of H5N1 bird deaths in Banyumas, Central Java.

The upshot is that the  OIE (World Organization For Animal Health) has maintained a long-standing position that vaccination of poultry cannot be considered a long-term solution to combating the avian flu virus.

 

They have repeatedly urged nations to develop an `exit strategy’ away from vaccines, and move towards humane culling for the control of avian influenza.

 

A difficult sell, however, to countries where food insecurity is a daily reality and where poultry serves as both an important part of their diet and provides a bit of income and/or wealth for a largely poor population.
