Over the past three weeks the number of new Dengue infections reported by the CDC in Puerto Rico has seen a welcome drop of nearly 20%, but the number remains well above the epidemic threshold.
A 27th fatality has been reported, as well – making this the worst year for Dengue on the island in recent memory.
The last big out break in 1998 is believed to have claimed 19 lives, and infected just over 10,000 people.
Concerns remain that recent tropical rains may boost the mosquito population over the coming weeks, and residents are urged to help eliminate standing water and other breeding places.
The next couple of months are traditionally the peak of Dengue activity in Puerto Rico.
None of which should dissuade you from visiting the island (or anyplace else where mosquito borne diseases may be encountered), as long as you take common sense precautions.
