France: MOA Announces 24 New Outbreaks Of H5N8

#12,212

Last Friday - after almost exactly 60 days of battling H5N8 on farms - France announced their 200th  poultry outbreak.   Today, just 5 days later, that number has risen to 224 - more than a 10% jump.
Nearly half of these new outbreaks (n=11) are from Landes, one of the three Departments (Gers, Landes, and Haute-Pyrenees) where extensive prophylactic culling of `healthy web-footed birds bred outdoors' was ordered last month.
Despite extraordinary measures, and the relatively limited region of France that has seen poultry outbreaks, containment of France's H5N8 outbreak remains an elusive goal.

In addition to these H5N8 outbreaks we've also seen a handful of of other HPAI detections, including H5N5 and H5N9, along with numerous Low Path (LPAI) subtypes over the past couple of months.

Situation on February 8, 2017: 224 H5N8 outbreaks in farms and 21 cases in wildlife confirmed and communicated.
