Japan MOH: 39 More COVID-19 Cases Confirmed Aboard The Diamond Princess

#14,851

The ordeal of the 3,700 passengers and crew aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship - currently quarantined in Yokohama, Japan - continues, with authorities trying to figure out how to care for and protect thousands of people, while continuing to detect new coronavirus cases.
Japan's MOH has confirmed 39 more positive cases, bring the total to 174 out of 492 people tested to so far.  Testing has been reserved only for those showing symptoms and their close contacts.
A large percentage of the passengers are elderly, many with pre-existing medical conditions, which only adds to the difficulties in maintaining the quarantine for the full 14 days (Feb 19th).  Close contacts of those that have recently fallen ill would presumably have their quarantines extended.

Meanwhile, testing continues, and new cases are likely to emerge.

New Coronavirus Infections Confirmed on Cruise Ships Quarantined at Yokohama Port (Part 7)

The cruise ship “Diamond Princess”, which arrived at Yokohama Port on February 3, is undergoing quarantine at sea, but 39 out of 53 newly tested coronaviruses have been tested. Coronavirus positivity was confirmed. In the future, it will be transported to medical institutions with infectious disease wards. A positive number was confirmed in 174 of the 492 people tested.
Those who are transported include elderly people and foreign nationals, and it is necessary to take measures that take into account physical conditions. The press is requested to give special consideration to coverage of this matter.
Quarantine of the cruise ship continues to be implemented. A new coronavirus test is conducted for those who need it, and the results will be announced later.

Meanwhile the Japan Times reports that in addition to the 39 from the ship - one quarantine officer assigned to the ship has become infected - and of the patients hospitalized, 4 are in serious condition.
