Italy MOH: 778 New COVID-19 Cases - Deaths Reach 197

#15,047

Earlier today, in ESICM: COVID-19 DIspatches From Northern Italy ICUswe looked at a sobering plea by doctors working in Northern Italy for other hospitals to get ready to be inundated by large numbers of very sick coronavirus patients.
Italy is nearly tied with Iran for the largest number of COVID-19 cases in Europe (Iran=4747, Italy=4635), but has reported nearly 60% more deaths (Iran=124, Italy=197)
There are anecdotal (and unconfirmed) reports that Iran's death toll is much higher than stated.  But as it stands now, Italy is reporting a 4.2% apparent mortality rate.  It is unclear whether this higher death rate reflects increased severity, a degradation in local health care delivery, or an inability to test a large number of mild or moderately ill cases.

In any event, the situation in Italy continues to grow worse with each passing day.
