Dr.  William Schaffner is a Professor and Chairman, Department of Preventive Medicine Professor of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.

HHS `New Media’ Interview Today

The HHS began to explore the potential of `new media’ several years ago and have moved heavily in that direction over the past 18 months.  

 

In 2007, they sponsored a truly remarkable experiment – The Pandemic Flu Leadership Blog -  where they invited a dozen people from around the nation to weigh in on pandemic issues.  I was very fortunate to be among those invited to take part.

 

Later that year, then Secretary of the HHS Michael Leavitt began his own blog, becoming the first cabinet level official to blog on the Internet.

 

Since then the agencies of the HHS (there are 11 of them) all have all improved their web presence, and most are now utilizing `new media’ outlets like Facebook, YouTube videos, Podcasts, and Twitter.

 

The HHS held a contest last summer inviting the public to create the best Pandemic Flu PSA (see Make A Flu Video And Maybe Win $2500), and have produced literally scores of informative videos of their own.

All of this is new territory for government agencies, and just like setting up a flu forum or blogging on infectious diseases, there really isn’t a handbook out there to tell you how to do it.  Those who work in the `new media’ are truly trailblazers.

 

Today, Sharon Sanders of FluTrackers will interview a couple of these pioneers on Radio Sandy Springs at 4pm EST.

This should be a fascinating hour.   I was lucky enough to spend some time with Andrew last September during my D.C. trip, so I look forward to hearing him today.

With the World Health Organization poised to meet this week to discuss whether to move to a post-pandemic alert phase, Sharon Sanders at FluTrackers has picked an opportune time to interview Gregory Härtl – spokesperson for the WHO – on the Infectious Disease Show which airs on Radio Sandy Springs.

 

This session, which was recorded late last week, is the second  time that Sharon has interviewed Härtl – the first time being late last June.  That interview may be heard a:

Its worldwide spread could not be stopped. It infected and killed thousands, pushing countries to rush to develop a vaccine that would limit its reach. The World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert level to the maximum 6. But now, months later, is the H1N1 pandemic virus still creating havoc?

 

That's the main topic of discussion when the WHO's emergency committee of 15 influenza experts meets tomorrow. New clusters of the virus may still emerge, but Gregory Hartl, WHO's spokesman for the H1N1 pandemic, said the experts will look at the possibility of moving into a new phase of the pandemic.

`Revere’ Of Effect Measure Interviewed Today

Later today one of the Reveres from Effect Measure will be interviewed on Radio Sandy Springs  by Sharon Sanders of FluTrackers.  

 

Which one, you ask?   Sorry . . .  that’s above my pay grade.

 

`Revere’ is one of the editors of Effect Measure, and they describe themselves this way: they are senior public health scientists and practitioners. Paul Revere was a member of the first local Board of Health in the United States (Boston, 1799). The Editors sign their posts "Revere" to recognize the public service of a professional forerunner better known for other things.

Of course, those of us in Flublogia recognize the Reveres of Effect Measure as being dispensers of solid scientific information and clear explanations about influenza, public health matters, and assorted trivia.

 

They are also no strangers to controversy, are possessed of a wonderfully warped sense of humor, and speak their minds freely.  So this should be a lively interview.

Fedson is a former Professor of Medicine at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and was formerly Director of Medical Affairs, Aventis Pasteur MSD.

 

Fedson is the author of a number of journal articles, and in recent years has devoted a great deal of attention to how we can meet the challenge of a global pandemic.

 

Last March Fedson was interviewed on FluTrackers by Sharon Sanders in the wake of the publication of his latest article in the CDC’s Journal of Emerging Infectious Disease, entitled Meeting the Challenge of Influenza Pandemic Preparedness in Developing Countries.

In recent months Sharon Sanders of FluTrackers has interviewed the likes of historian and author John Barry,  Dr. William Schaffner, of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine,  and Dr. Michael Osterholm of CIDRAP  on the Infectious Disease Show which airs on Radio Sandy Springs at 4pm EDT every Monday.

 

The show is generally rebroadcast at 6pm EDT on the same day, before being placed in the archives.

 

Sadly, Sharon has apparently run out of `A-List’ guests, and will resort to having me on the show later today.
