If you go strictly by the Iranian MOH's reports, it may appear that Iran's COVID-19 epidemic is beginning to subside. Over the past two days we've seen significant drops in the number of new patients identified each day, and the official death toll - while high - is much lower than Italy's.
But there are persistent, albeit unverifiable reports of swamped hospitals, and many more deaths coming out of Iran. And 3 days ago, Iran admitted they had 16,000 (apparently untested) suspected cases in hospitals, on top of their official case count.Whether Iran is purposefully manipulating the numbers, or they have hit a `testing wall' due to a lack of test kits or hospital beds, or their recently heightened internal travel restrictions are preventing new cases from reaching hospitals, there are reasons not to immediately conclude that lower daily numbers are a good sign.
The head of the Public Relations and Information Center of the Ministry of Health announced:
