Although the H5N1 bird flu virus has slipped out of the daily headlines, federal agencies such as Homeland Security, the FBI, CDC, HHS, USDA, FEMA, and many others continue to take this threat seriously.
In 2008, the organizers of the 3rd annual International Symposium on Agroterrorism commissioned Nusura, Inc. - an emergency management consulting firm – to produce a video on the looming bird flu threat.
The producers traveled to Vietnam, and interviewed officials with the CDC, HHS, and the USDA, in order to produce this informative 22 minute film.
This video is now available on Youtube in two parts on the NusuralUSA channel.
While the number of cases cited are clearly several years out of date, and the `next pandemic’ turned out to be a milder H1N1 – not the virulent H5N1 strain that was feared - the pandemic flu threat remains.
Whether it stems from the H5N1 virus, or perhaps one of the H7s, H9s, or some other lineage - another novel influenza virus will emerge.
Despite being a bit dated, the following film offers an excellent introduction to the the bird flu threat by such familiar names as Dr. Nancy Cox of the CDC, Dr. David Swain of the USDA, and Rear Admiral Craig Vanderwagon (USPHS - retired).
