As I wrote yesterday, about another `suspect’ case in Saudi Arabia - Most will likely turn out to have something less dire, like Dengue or malaria.  But the possibility of Ebola in travelers coming from West Africa cannot be ignored.

Tonight, not unexpectedly, we have confirmation that the `suspect case’ in isolation at Mount Sinai Hospital for the past two days in New York City has tested negative for the Ebola virus.

Below is a screen shot of the announcement from the Mount Sinai Hospital Twitter account.

Although I can find no official announcement on  Spain’s National Ministry of Health website, or Valencia’s Regional website, multiple news outlets in Spain are now reporting the the traveler from Morocco who fell ill on a flight into Valencia on Monday (see Spain Testing Traveler For Possible Ebola Infection) has tested negative for the virus.

HEALTH ALERT

The analyzes have ruled out the disease in man, and Guinean nationals from Morocco

The analyzes carried out on a patient at the Hospital La Fe in Valencia, which had been isolated for suspected Ebola suffer, they have ruled out the virus and the disease entered Spain, sources have advanced the Ministry of Health.

The patient who was isolated at the La Fe Hospital in Valencia on suspicion of having the Ebola virus , originally from Guinea and landed at Valencia from Morocco , is recovering well from a clinical standpoint.

The Minister of Health of Valencia, Manuel Llombart, said the patient, who has not offered more data, a series of symptoms during a flight from Morocco, such as the need for oxygen and nasal bleeding, which were suspected to crew could be infected by Ebola virus.

He then warned the health service abroad, he was isolated in the same plane, he was picked up at the airport and he was moved to the garage of infectious patients Faith.

Although not an altogether unexpected outcome, I’ll continue to try to find an official statement confirming this report.

In a follow up to Sunday’s blog  (see Watching Indonesia Again), the veterinarian who was placed into isolation after developing a fever and respiratory symptoms  in the wake of doing poultry inspections has tested negative for the H5N1 virus.  The early symptoms of H5N1 infection are pretty much the same as with any respiratory viral infection, which means we tend to see a number suspected cases turn out to be negative.

This from Solopos.com.

DA Veterinarian Bird Flu Negative

Solopos.com, KLATEN - DA, vet initially suspected of contracting the H5N1 virus after examining poultry in Balong Kulon village, Village Kragilan, Gantiwarno Subdistrict, Klaten, declared bird flu negative.

"Around 09.00 pm last [Tuesday] we got good news from dr Moewardi. That the results of laboratory tests of veterinary negative DA. Now he is no longer in the isolation room and moved in the treatment room, "said Head of the Department of Agriculture (Dispertan) Klaten, Wahyu Prasetyo, told reporters on Tuesday (26/11/2013).

Previously, a few days ago, the vet came to Hamlet Balong DA Kulon, Kragilan Village, District Gantiwarno. It was to follow up on reports of local residents about the birds that died suddenly and allegedly exposed to the H5N1 virus that causes bird flu.

At that time, the vet came to the location to do the spraying. A few days later, the DA is in a condition not fit ill with bird flu-like symptoms such as high fever accompanied by shortness of breath, cough, and headache. He was treated in dr Moewardi for further examination.

Yesterday (see Hong Kong Investigating Possible Coronavirus Case) we learned of a 4-year old boy, recently arrived in Hong Kong from Saudi Arabia, who was in isolation and being tested for the novel coronavirus.

Today test results are back, and the good news (much as we saw with Denmark’s 5 suspected cases ten days ago), is that this patient tested negative for the virus.  Instead, the boy has the flu.

Here’s the press release from the Centre for Health Protection.

Suspected case of Severe Respiratory Disease associated with Novel Coronavirus confirmed to be influenza infection

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health said today (October 8) that the suspected case of Severe Respiratory Disease associated with Novel Coronavirus affecting a four-year-old boy who came from Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, was confirmed to be an influenza infection.

CHP spokesman said that the Centre had carried out an urgent investigation into the case on receipt of notification from Ruttonjee Hospital yesterday. The boy was subsequently admitted to Queen Mary Hospital (QMH) for isolation yesterday. Investigation revealed that the boy has upper respiratory tract symptoms and there is no clinical or radiological evidence of pneumonia. His current condition is stable.

Respiratory specimens taken from the boy at QMH tested positive for influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus but negative for Novel Coronavirus associated with Severe Respiratory Disease. The patient is not a case of Severe Respiratory Disease associated with Novel Coronavirus infection.

The spokesman advised travellers returning from novel coronavirus-affected countries with respiratory symptoms should wear a facial mask, seek medical attention and reveal the travel history to the doctor.

With hundreds of thousands of people expected to visit Saudi Arabia for the Hajj over the next month, and no lack of seasonal respiratory viruses in circulation, we can probably expect to see a number of false alarms like this.
